The Sales Engine
The system that takes the leads your Lead Engine produces and converts them into paying customers. Three steps: Nurture, Convert, Close — a process, not luck.
Most businesses don't have a sales process — they have a series of conversations that sometimes result in a sale. The difference matters: a process is repeatable, measurable, and improvable. A series of conversations is dependent on the individual, inconsistent, and impossible to optimise.
The Sales Engine is the second engine in the Real Business Engine framework. It takes the leads your Lead Engine produces and converts them into customers your Loyalty Engine can retain.
Nurture
Stay present until they're ready. Most leads aren't ready to buy when they first enquire. The Nurture step is about staying present — useful, relevant, top of mind — in the gap between first contact and the moment they're ready to make a decision. This isn't about pestering. It's about being there with the right information at the right time, so when they are ready, you're the obvious choice. Without nurture, leads go cold and you start from scratch with the next one.
Convert
A process, not luck. The Convert step is where most businesses lose the most leads — not because the product is wrong, but because there's no process. Every sale becomes an ad hoc conversation that depends on the mood, energy, and availability of whoever happens to be doing the selling. A working Convert step is a defined sequence: here's what happens first, here's what happens next, here's how we handle the common questions. It turns 'sometimes we close' into 'we close consistently.'
Close
Get to a clear yes. The Close step isn't about pressure tactics or clever scripts. It's about making it easy and clear for someone who's already decided they want to work with you to actually say yes. That means a simple proposal process, clear pricing, no unnecessary friction, and a defined next step. If your close rate is low, it's usually not a closing problem — it's a friction problem. People want to buy, but the process makes it hard.
Signs your Sales Engine is broken
- Lots of enquiries but few sales — leads come in but go nowhere.
- Long gaps between first contact and closing — deals stall and you're not sure why.
- Revenue is unpredictable month to month — no way to forecast what's coming.
- Every sale feels like starting from scratch — no repeatable process, just individual conversations.
- You're the only one who can close — if you're not in the conversation, it doesn't happen.
How we build it
We start by mapping what actually happens in your sales conversations today — not what you think happens, but what really does. Then we identify where leads are dropping off and build the missing steps. Usually, it's Nurture (no follow-up between first contact and the buying decision) and Close (too much friction in the final step).
The goal is a process that someone other than the founder can run — because if it only works when you're in the room, it's not a system. It's a dependency.
